Axis Interior Systems team meeting discussing continuous improvement strategy

Kaizen at Axis, Why We Never Stop Improving

Introduction

I want to tell you something that might sound counterintuitive coming from the CEO of a company that has been delivering commercial flooring across Ohio and the Tri-State region for over 30 years.

We are not done improving. Not even close.

In fact, the longer I lead this company, the more convinced I become that the moment any business, no matter how successful, no matter how experienced, decides it has figured everything out, that is the moment it starts to decline. The construction industry moves. Client expectations move. Materials evolve. The workforce changes. And the companies that stay relevant are the ones that move with it, deliberately and consistently.

That belief has a name. It’s a Japanese philosophy called Kaizen and it has fundamentally shaped how I think about leading Axis Interior Systems.

What Kaizen Actually Means

The word Kaizen (改善) translates literally to “change for the better.” But in practice, it means something more specific than that. It means committing to small, consistent, incremental improvements, in your processes, your communication, your systems, and your culture, on an ongoing basis rather than waiting for a dramatic overhaul to fix what isn’t working.

This is not a revolutionary idea. But it is a disciplined one. And discipline, in my experience, is what separates companies that talk about getting better from companies that actually do.

The Kaizen journey is not a straight line — it is a continuous cycle of improvement that compounds over time.

The core insight of Kaizen is deceptively simple: every process in an organisation can be improved. Not just the obvious ones. Not just the broken ones. Every single one. The way we answer a client call. The way we sequence a phased installation in an occupied building. The way we onboard a new team member. The way we conduct a post-project review. All of it can be done better, and all of it is worth examining with fresh eyes regularly.

Why This Matters in Commercial Flooring

You might be wondering what a Japanese business philosophy has to do with installing carpet tile in a Cincinnati courthouse or luxury vinyl in a university residence hall. The answer is everything.

Commercial flooring is a project-based business. Every project is different. Every building has its own subfloor conditions, its own operational constraints, its own client expectations, its own timeline pressures. There is no single playbook that works every time. What there is what there has to be, is a team that is constantly learning, constantly communicating, and constantly asking how we can do this better than we did last time.

At Axis, we operate with a long-term planning mindset. We think in one-year, three-year and ten-year horizons. We set targets, we review our performance against them honestly, and we make adjustments. Not because we’re dissatisfied with what we’ve built, I’m genuinely proud of this team and what we’ve achieved over three decades, but because pride in your past and commitment to your future are not mutually exclusive. The best version of Axis is always the next one.

What It Looks Like in Practice

Kaizen is not a programme you roll out once and tick off a list. It is a culture, and culture is built through daily habits, not annual announcements.

Project debriefs

For us, it shows up in how we approach every project debrief. When a project is complete, we don't just move on. We ask what worked, what didn't, and what we would do differently. Not to assign blame, that is the opposite of a Kaizen mindset, but to extract learning that makes the next project better.

Strategic planning

And it shows up in how we plan. A ten-year strategic vision is only as useful as the one-year plan that supports it, which is only as useful as the weekly habits that feed it. Kaizen taught me that. Big goals are achieved through small, consistent, disciplined actions compounded over time.

Axis Academy

It shows up in how we invest in our people through the Axis Academy, our internal training and development programme. We don't hire people and leave them to figure it out. We build them up, because a better-trained team delivers better outcomes, and better outcomes build stronger client relationships, and stronger client relationships sustain a better business. That chain of cause and effect is Kaizen in action.

Vendor relationships

It shows up in how we think about our vendor relationships. We work with 60+ manufacturing partners not because we want every option available, but because we want the right option for every project, and finding that requires ongoing learning about what the market offers, what performs best in which environments, and where the next generation of materials is heading.

Quote from Michael, CEO of Axis Interior Systems, on commitment to Kaizen culture

An Invitation

I’m sharing this not because I think Axis has Kaizen perfectly figured out, that would be the most un-Kaizen thing I could say. I’m sharing it because I believe the philosophy is genuinely worth knowing, and because I think it applies as much to the clients and partners we work with as it does to us.

If you’re a building owner planning a renovation, a GC managing a complex construction programme, or a facilities director responsible for a portfolio of properties, the question of how to keep improving your processes, your vendor relationships, and your outcomes is one we share.

We’d love to talk about it. For an excellent, deeper read on the Kaizen philosophy itself, the Kaizen Institute is the definitive external resource.
